Great news for renters and homeowners
Hi Erik,
As a direct result of SpareRoom’s six year Raise the Roof campaign, people in the UK can now earn up to £7,500 a year tax free by taking in a lodger.
Why is this important?
The UK is in the middle of a massive housing crisis, yet homeowners in England alone are sitting on an estimated 19 million empty bedrooms between them. Freeing up just 5% of those rooms would house almost a million people – that’s roughly the population of Birmingham!
Encouraging more people to rent out their rooms will boost the supply of affordable rental accommodation at a time when we desperately need it. We’re not building anywhere near enough new homes so it’s vital we make better use of the ones we’ve got.
A big thank you to everyone who supported our campaign, including MPs from all the major parties, Shelter, Generation Rent and Sarah Beeny, plus the tens of thousands of SpareRoom users who got involved.
