Mr Gay England is the new Mr Gay Europe

Mr Gay Europe 2017 is England’s Matt Rood (37), a professional dog walker and dog trainer.

Matt won the Social Media Challenge (SoMe) and “My Project” challenge, he came second in the preliminary interview, the photo challenge and the sports challenge, and he came third in the written test and forth in the online vote. His total score came to 845 out of maximum 1200.

The result was made official at Pride Park in Stockholm, Sweden, during Stockholm Pride, 5 August 2017.

– Matt Rod is one of the most dedicated and hardworking gay activist that I have had the honor to get to know through Mr Gay Europe, Tore Aasheim, the MGE president, comments.

– With his big heart, his kind attitude but also strong devotion, and with a project that shows that he really put his money where his mouth is, Matt both showed us his commitment and the fact that you don’t need to be a twink to win Mr Gay Europe, Aasheim says.

In response to Saturday’s acts of domestic terrorism in Charlottesville, CenterLink Chief Executive Officer Lora L. Tucker said, “We must choose love over hatred and positive action over lethargic blindness to the disparities, inequalities, and injustice that happens in our communities, states, our nation, and the world.  LGBTQ Centers stand ready as a safe space for all.”

What can you do to help combat hate?  Your personal safety should always be a top priority.  Be vigilant, speak up, but say safe.  Below are a few actions you can take this week to show your support for Charlottesville:

1.  Join a solidarity event happening near you.  You can find one here.

2. Share your story through CommunitiesAgainstHate.org, or call their hotline:  844-9-NO-HATE (844-966-4283).

3.  If you or someone you know has been the victim of a hate crime, please contact the Stop Hate Project – Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights.

This is a massive season for Per Mertesacker. The Arsenal captain, who missed virtually the whole of 2016/17 before returning to inspire the Gunners to the FA Cup in May, has announced that this will be his last as a player before he steps up to become Academy manager next summer. Yet there’s no slacking off, and he still has what he calls a “kind of desperation” to be the best he can be.

“That’s how I’ve approached all my career as a footballer, so I’ll continue to do it,” he says. “It’s special because it’s the final season. You prepare well as you always have, but there’s something in you that says you have to enjoy it as much as you can.”

Per is already happy to be a mentor to the younger players who have stepped up to the first team over the summer. “It’s really important that they understand when they feel there is a gap between youth and first team, they need to express themselves by coming to the first team and communicating. They’re welcomed. If there’s anything I can help with, they can talk – there is no need to hide.”

But the skipper is also demanding, and has some strong advice for the players he will be taking charge of at the end of his final season as a player. “I respect them highly but the only ones who will make it are the ones who make the most of their potential. Talent means nothing to me – it’s all about hard work. I put the emphasis on making sure that they’re not told how talented they are too much. Talent is what you make of it.”

None of this detracts from Per’s overriding ambition this season – to win the Premier League. “It’s really important for me to clarify that I want to give 100 per cent. I want Arsenal to be champions of England.”

It would be a fitting finale to a glittering career.
